Kimono Sleeves & Scent

Those in the know, know. There is a close connection between kimono sleeves and scent. In Japanese classical literature, the authors frequently describe the sleeves scented with plum blossoms, sandalwood, other incense ingredients, and so on. Misode Tenmangu is the jinja which enshrines “one sleeve”, so we hold “Kenkousai” on January 25th every year. In this Shinto ritual, we get one kimono sleeve scented with plum blossoms blessed at god (Sugawara Michizane).
