Please  take  a  look  at  that  stone  monument  in  the  shape  of  a  coin  with  a  hole.

穴の空いた硬貨をかたどった石碑をご覧ください。

 

That  is  called  “Monsenhi”  or  “Reigenhi”.

あれは「文銭碑」または「霊験碑」と呼ばれています。

 

It  was  built  by  Mohichi  Ikutama,  who  showed  his  gratitude  for  the  miraculous  experience  of  Tenjin.

生玉茂七さんによって建てられ、天神さん（道真公）の霊験に感謝をあらわされたとのことです。

 

“Monsen”  is  a  kind  of  coins  which  was  used  in  once Japan,  and  is  called  “Bunsen”.

「文銭」とはかつて日本で使用されていた硬貨の一種で、所謂　「ぶんせん」です。

 

A  long  time  ago,  Mohichi  served  an  apprenticeship  as  a  merchant.

大昔、茂七さんは商人として丁稚奉公していました。

 

Unfortunately,  he  was  wrongly  suspected  and  falsely  accused.

不運なことに、茂七さんは身に覚えの無い疑いをかけられ、冤罪を被りました。

 

He  prayed  to  Sugawara  Michizane  many  times  that  he  would  be  saved  from  the  false  charge.

彼はその冤罪が晴れるよう、何度も何度も菅原道真公に祈りました。

 

There  were  many  twists  and  turns,  but  Monsen  that  his  employer’s  house  used  proved  his  innocence.

いろいろとありましたが、彼の奉公先が使っていた文銭のおかげで彼の無罪が証明されました。

 

He  was  so  grateful  to  Tenjin.

茂七さんは、天神さんに大層感謝したそうでございます。

 

That  is  why,  Tenjin  is  known  as  “the  God  of  snowflakes”.

そのような経緯もあり、御袖天満宮は、「雪冤（冤罪を晴らす）」の御神徳もあるということで信奉をあつめております。
