＂Kuwabara Kuwabara＂ is the spell to avert thunder, which has been used since ancient times in Japan. We Japanese people have believed that reciting this spell can avoid thunders, and besides, it can keep misfortune and bad luck away from us. Why on earth is it “Kuwabara” ？

「くわばら　くわばら」は雷除けのおまじないで、日本では古くから伝わっております。私たち日本人は、この呪文を唱えることで雷を避け、さらには不運や悪運を我が身から遠ざけることができると信じてきました。いったいなぜそれが「くわばら」なんでしょう？？

Actually, there is a close relation between this spell and Sugawara Michizane.

実はこのおまじないと菅原道真公とには密接な関係があるのです。

Although he has now become an acknowledged god of study, he used to be the scary god of the thunder. After his death, people in those days believed every lightning strike in the capital were caused by the wrath of Michizane.

菅公は、今でこそ学問の神様として名を馳せていますが、かつては恐ろしい雷神でした。彼の死後、当時の人々は、都で起こる全ての落雷事故を菅公の強い怨みによるものだと信じました。

But miraculously enough, only a spot called Kuwabara was safe. Some people rumored that it was because Kuwabara was his fief during his lifetime, others said it was because thunders tended to avoid a mulberry tree.

ところが、全く不思議なことに、「桑原（くわばら）」という場所だけが雷の被害を受けず無事だったのです。その理由を、「桑原」が生前の道真公の領地だったからだと噂する人もいれば、雷は桑の木を避けて落ちるものだからだと言う人もいました。

In any case, Kuwabara will protect us.

いずれにせよ、「くわばら」は私たちを災厄から守ってくれます。
